1917-1949
1917: Gerolamo Gaslini's second daughter, Giannina, falls ill and dies at the age of 12. Her peritonitis wasn't diagnosed in time. Subsequently, in response to this personal sorrow Gerolamo Gaslini decides to open a pediatric hospital in Genoa.
1931: on Febuary 17th the Charter of the Gaslini Institute is signed. Gerolamo Gaslini, its main investor, assigns the architectural design to the architect, Crippa. To develop the medical and health care plan Gaslini works with one of the most important pediatricians of the time, Dante Pacchioni.
1938: the Giannina Gaslini Institute is inaugurated. It is a complex of 20 buildings covering 50.000 square meters.
1939: Gerolamo Gaslini is nominated Senator of the Reign.
1940: the Giannina Gaslini Institute is recognized as a Moral Body by Royal Decree on 9/5/1940.
1946: the school for infant supervision "Lorenza Gaslini" is founded. The school is named after Gerolamo's wife.
1949: the year of the Gerolamo Gaslini Foundation's charter. Gaslini transfers all his property to the Foundation. The property is to be administered in order to improve and perfect the Institute. Gaslini's intension is to give administrative and economic support to the hospital's future development, with a particular emphasis on research.
