Gerolamo Gaslini was a great entrepreneur and a man of "powerful generosity" as Indro Montanelli wrote. His story is that of a great business man and a philanthropist who invested his wealth and passion in establishing the Giannina Gaslini Institute.
1877-1917: Gaslini entrepreneur
Gerolamo Gaslini was born in Monza, on the 3rd of July 1877. His father was a small entrepreneur in the cooking oil business. At the age of 17, he decided to seek his fortune in America. But, upon arriving in Genoa, he couldn't afford to pay for the boat, and from then on his story became tied to that of the city. "I had a hundred Liras in my pocket - he later said - but I needed 400 for the ticket. So I began, with that little money, to work around the port, and after two years I had a small capital, but I lost it several times...". In the subsequent years he was very successful economically, particularly in the food business. He began by working in the family business and grew to be called the "king of cooking oil". In this field Gaslini built an industrial empire based on his business skill, marketing techniques and technological innovation.
In 1902 he married Lorenza. They had two daughters, Germana in 1903 and Giannina in 1905. The death of Giannina in 1917, caused by a peritonitis which was diagnosed too late, was a painful loss.
