1917- 1948: The Hospital and the Foundation
Gaslini's response to his personal loss was to build a hospital for children. Many years passed before the hospital came to life. The charter of the Gaslini Institute was written in 1931. In 1938 the hospital was built: a 20 building structure with 500 beds. After the war Gerolamo Gaslini considered how to develop the Institute. To this end he established in 1949 the Gerolamo Gaslini Foundation. He donated all his assets to the Foundation, several billion Liras at the time. He wanted to allow the hospital to be autonomous and to provide for its structural and scientific development. Gaslini's primary interest was the connection between research and health care to improve conditions of childhood: this was his objective from the beginning. His idea was modern and ahead of its time in many ways and is still evident in the medical and scientific excellence of the Gaslini Institute.
