In 1957 the University of Genoa bestowed Gerolamo Gaslini with an ad honorem degree in medicine. This was an occasion to confirm the trust in the relationship between research and medicine. During his lifetime Gerolamo Gaslini had received other titles and honours: Count of San Gerolamo, Senator of the Reign, Knight of Work. Who knew him remember him as a hard, shy man, an untiring worker and capable of great acts of generosity. Gaslini donated to the Italian State important works and collections. Outstanding is the acquisition and donation to the State, of the Pietą Prenestina, the restoration of the Abbey of San Gerolamo at Quarto, the enlargements done to the Basilica of Sant'Antonio of Padua and on the church Gesu di Roma. Further he donated to the Academy of Brera and the University of Genoa a rare collection of manuscripts and incunabulum (the Gaslini donation) of notable value and historical-cultural interest. In 1964 Gerolamo Gaslini died in Genoa. The history and continuity of the Hospital and the Foundation remain as living monuments of the passion, firmness and farsightedness of their founder.
