Birth of the Foundation and its history
In 1949 Gerolamo Gaslini decided to donate his entire estate to the Foundation. The capital of the "king of cooking oil" was immense. The industrial empire he had built during the years included cooking oil companies and factories. Furthermore, there was real estate throughout Italy, buildings including his home (now the head quarters of the Foundation) and investments witch included the majority share of Banca Belinzaghi. The total value of the property was 700 million euros. The holdings were complex and difficult to manage because they were diverse and geographically dispersed. Over the years the variety of industries and number of shares were decreased, thus the assets now consist primarily of real estate holdings.
