An area for the new development of the Gaslini Institute
Castagna is in Quarto, east of Genoa, about 1 Km from the Giannina Gaslini Institute. Here one finds a Benedictine monastic complex, which includes the Benedictine Abbey, Villa Quartara and an enormous park. This complex was bought by the Foundation for the future expansion of the Gaslini Institute. Here the hospital will enjoy new space for research, treatment, and assistance for sick children and their families.
The goals of the project
The Foundation purchased the area within the ambit of the Gaslini Duemila project, a plan which calls for the expansion of a new international role for the Gaslini Institute. The Castagna area represents the first real expansion of the foundation's real estate holdings since 1931. When the project is completed the Institute will have:
- an area dedicated to training (the former Villa Quartara), which will house national and international training courses, in addition to the services and facilities for the course attendants;
- an area dedicated to reception and accommodation of patients and their families (the former Benedictine Abbey) which will also be equipped for outpatient treatment;
- a new building for laboratories where researchers will be able to work in close contact with one another, to encourage a knowledge sharing, that will facilitate scientific progress and accelerate the progress of medical application.
