Rotating fund
The Rotating fund was founded in 2002 following an agreement between the Gaslini Foundation, the Giannina Gaslini Institute, the City of Genoa, the Province of Genoa and the Liguria Region.
The Gaslini Hospital or other parties refer the cases to the Foundation. The assessment of the cases is done by a specific commission.
The Fund is financed by the Gaslini Foundation, the Liguria Region and by donations solicited through the column "Caro Gaslini" (Dear Gaslini) in the newspaper Secolo XIX, which features cases of patients of the Gaslini Institute.
The second year of activity confirmed and consolidated the excellent results of the first year; the 100.000 Euro contribution given in 2002 by the Liguria Region, combined with the contributions of the Foundation and of private citizens, consented the treatment of 81 cases of children affected by serious diseases, especially orthopaedic and heart related illnesses, coming from 15 different countries (14 from Iraq) for a total expense of 820.000 euros for assistance and 80.000 for family accommodation (the latter covered by the initiative "Assegno Amico").
Details of the expenses can be found in the hospital's billing documents.
Secolo XIX and Caro Gaslini
The newspaper Secolo XIX has devoted a column called "Caro Gaslini" (Dear Gaslini) to the Rotating fund. One of the objectives of this column is to bring readers' attention to the stories of children treated thanks to the financial support given by the Rotating fund. Each week the newspaper informs its readers about an individual case or about medical outcomes brought about due to their generous support.
Over the years it has become a regular feature that reveals, through the number of donations it generates, the love of the people of Genoa and the Liguria Region toward the Gaslini, the children's hospital.
